Our Guest Speaker:
Keith Gulsvig

Greetings All, This is my third time as a presenter to the Central Minnesota Civil War Roundtable. I grew up in Glenwood, MN and after college went to work as a commercial photographer. Since I was young I had an interest in history, and in the early ‘90s I joined the First Minn. Vol. Inf. Reenactor group based out of Historic Fort Snelling. Starting as a Pvt. In the ranks and going as far as serving as Captain of Company C, of the First Minn. Vol. Inf. at the Gettysburg reenactment in 1998. Reenacting gave me an interesting perspective of life as a civil war soldier.

The Civil War Soldier:
From a Man to an Army

An explanation of the Federal Army as it existed during the American Civil War. I hope this will help you to understand how it worked when you read or hear anything about the war. For instance the lowest rank was private, the next was corporal, no buck, just private. I will show some examples of linear tactics, why massing troops on an enemy position was a little more than marching up in a straight line to be rifle or cannon fodder. How separation of the classes was still a major factor in the command structure, but how a private at the start of the war could rise to be a general. Why an Army would run "out of steam" before an enemy could be vanquished. Why was hardtack and coffee was in the same order despised and coveted.
