Our Next CMCWRT Meeting

Tuesday, February 16, 2016

Time: 7:00pm

Guest Speaker: Vince Botz

The Battle of Birch Coulee

Vince's presentation will concern the Battle of Birch Coolie, September 2-3rd, 1862. The battle was located about 1 north of Morton, MN. The battle was considered a disaster for Sibley and a victory for the Dakota. The battlefield is now a county park and is a reasonable driving distance (about 1-1/2 hours southwest of St. Cloud) and has an informative walking path for visitors.

Annual Civil War Symposium

April 2nd, 2016

At the Historic Fort Snelling History Center

Bullets were still flying when soldiers began to commemorate the most important event in the nation’s history. Fraternal organizations like the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, the Grand Army of the Republic, and the United Confederate Veterans eventually numbered over half a million. Generations later, research, publishing, battlefield touring and preservation efforts still fascinate. The Rochester, St. Croix Valley, Cannon Valley, Central Minnesota, Hiawatha Valley, Minnesota Valley, Albert Lea and Twin Cities Civil War Roundtables partner with the Minnesota Historical Society and the Minnesota Civil War Commemorative Task Force to jointly sponsor this Civil War Symposium.

Art at the Minnesota State Capitol

Battle of Gettysburg oil painting by Rufus Zogbaum, it was in the Governor's Reception Room at the Minnesota State Capitol.

There is a serious movement underway to remove the Civil War art from the Minnesota Capitol!    Please take the time to fill out the survey below to make sure that our voices are heard.

Click here to access State of Minnesota online survey.

Also, please email the committee and voice your desire to keep Civil War art in the Capitol.  The building was designed to be a monument to Minnesota's role in the Civil War!  Minnesota's contributions to the Union cause are impressive and need to be demonstrated publicly to future generations.
